Residual Hazardous Materials Management

Production of annual report or statement

Examples of residual hazardous material identification (RHM)

The following table gives the codes for the residual hazardous materials that are the most used or present some problems.

For hazardous material not found in the table, firms must consult Schedule 4 of the RRHM as well as the list of classes in the Regulation respecting the transportation of dangerous goods (TDGR) to codify their waste. For more information on TDGR classes, consult the document "Transport Dangerous Goods Directorate".

The classification of many hazardous wastes under the TGDR can be found in Schedule 3. The hazardous wastes are listed in alphabetical order, with the list divided in four sections.

To help you classify your residual hazardous materials, please take note of the following:

  • contaminated soil (with the exception of soil containing over 50 mg of PCBs per kilogram) and biomedical waste are excluded from the definition of "hazardous material" provided in section 2 of the RRHM; consequently, firms are not required to include them in their annual statement or report;
  • the term "absorbent" includes rags, sawdust (or other granular material) that may absorb a hazardous material;
  • to identify used oil filters more specifically, a new code (A05) was added in Schedule 4;
    • classification under the TDGR:
    • is 0.0 for oil and grease, as they are not contemplated by the TDGR;
    • is 6.1 for halogenated organic solvents, such as trichloroethane and trichloroethylene;
    • is 3.0 for nonhalogenated organic solvents, such as toluene, acetone and methanol;
    • is 8.0 for acid or basic material;
    • is 9.1 for material containing or contaminated with PCBs;
    • is 9.3 for leachable material.
